 TIME IS UP!!!!
  Tuesday, December 16, 2008
Two years ago, the Federal Motor Carrier required that all intrastate carriers and operators of commercial motor vehicles MUST OBTAIN A USDOT number by January 1, 2008 and that number had to be displayed on your vehicle(s) by January 1, 2009.  This important date is only days away; and, if you wish to avoid costly fines and citations from state and local law enforcement, you need to work fast.

“Commercial Motor Vehicle” means any self-propelled or towed motor vehicle used on a highway in commerce as defined in (CFR 49, Part 390.5) when the vehicle:

•    Has a gross vehicle weight rating or gross combination weight rating, or gross vehicle weight or gross combination weight of 10,001 lbs. or more, whichever is greater; or,
•    Is designed or used to transport more than 8 passengers (including the driver) for compensation; or,
•    Is designed or used to transport more than 15 passengers (including the driver) and is not used to transport passengers for compensation, or
•    Is used in transporting material found by the Secretary of Transportation to be hazardous under 49 S.S.C 51 transported in a quantity requiring placarding under regulations prescribed by the Secretary under 49 CFR, subtitle B, chapter 1, subchapter C.

The term “Commercial Motor Vehicle” includes anyone who operates one of the above-mentioned vehicles.  Examples include, but are not limited to: private and for-hire companies, farm operations, CONSTRUCTION COMPANIES, PLUMBERS, church buses, limousines and LANDSCAPERS.  This term does not apply to recreational and personal use vehicles.

The numbers must be legible during daylight hours, from a distance of 50’ while the vehicle is stationary and in sharp contrast with the background of which it is displayed.
