David Joseph Fons passed away on December 11, 2017. Dave was born July 30, 1954, at the U.S. Air Force Hospital at Bolling Air Force Base in Washington, D.C. He graduated from Berkley High School in 1972, and although he spent several years studying for the priesthood, he met the love of his life, Jill, in 1971, and they married in 1976. He and Jill loved going on cruises and vacationing in Fort Myers, Florida.

Dave loved riding his Jeep around town, watching and coaching hockey, listening to Texas music, and playing with his grandchildren. Dave truly loved his work. He was in the earthmoving and road construction business, and even at a young age was a dedicated and talented heavy equipment operator, a passion that never ceased, even as business ownership took over. He had an entrepreneurial spirit and ran a successful company, Fonson, Inc., from 1978 to 2014. Even while on vacation, Dave would scour the area for similar projects to his, making new friends and offering advice. He never outgrew the sandbox and passed his love of all things dirt to his sons.

Dave was a member of the Michigan Road Builders Association, the Michigan Infrastructure & Transportation Association, and the International Union of Operating Engineers.

Dave is survived by his wife of 41 years, Jill (Boman) Fons; his sons Garrett (Michelle Simpson) and Brendan; daughter Courtney (Ryan) Sprague; sister Pamela (William Marlatt) Fons; brother Craig (Carol) Fons; sister-in-law Julie Fons; grandchildren Bowen Sprague, Arbor Sprague, Baby Sprague (due in June 2018), Jacob Simpson, and Joseph Fons; nieces and nephews Allison Marlatt, Ashley Fons, Craig Marlatt (Beau Wangtrakuldee), Michael Fons, Scott Marlatt, Taylor Fons, Martha Fons, Samuel Fons, and Mila Fons; and the entire Boman family.

Dave was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph Fons, Jr. and Carolyn (Curtis) Fons, and his beloved brother Richard Fons.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, December 17, 2017 from 11:00 A.M. – 8:00 P.M. at the Keehn Funeral Home in Brighton. Funeral services will be held on Monday, December 18, 2017 at 11:00 A.M. at the Brighton Assembly of God with the Rev. Bradley Trask officiating. Friends may visit at the church beginning at 10:00 A.M. on Monday.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to The Dave Fons Memorial Fund for the Advocacy of Truck Safety with envelopes available at the funeral home. Please visit Dave’s Book of Memories at www.keehnfuneralhome.com.

MITA would like to extend our deepest condolences to the entire Fons and Boman families, as well as to all the industry colleagues who worked with Dave.
