In Memoriam - Robert "Bob" Welke

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Robert "Bob" Welke, former MDOT Director from 1996-1997. He was 81 years old.
Bob passed away peacefully at home, after a short illness, surrounded by his loving family on Saturday, January 16, 2016.
He was born in 1934 in Detroit. After graduating from Walled Lake High School, Bob attended the University of Detroit, where he graduated in 1958 with a Bachelor's of Science in Civil Engineering.
Bob began working for the Michigan Department of Transportation in 1958 as a surveying rodman, working his way up to the position of director of the department before retiring in 1997.
Together with his wife, Sue, Bob raised seven children. At the time of the his death, he was the proud grandfather of 15 grandchildren and the great-grandfather of four great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to a charity of your choice, or a donation to any of the following charities: Beaver Island Community Center, the Ellen Welke Memorial Fund at Holy Cross Church on Beaver Island, or the Human Society of Branch County.
