Your recent editorial calling on Congress to approve the transportation bill was right to stress the need to get the job done and the impact better road funding will have on our state. You missed the mark, however, on several important fronts.
The Michigan Transportation Team, a coalition of more than 80 public and private organizations fighting to strengthen and improve transportation funding, has worked hard — alongside Michigan’s congressional delegation — to raise Michigan’s guaranteed minimum rate of return on federal gas tax dollars to at least 95 percent. While that looks unlikely to happen in this bill, Michigan is in no position to scoff at the 92 percent minimum rate of return and the approximately $200 million more per year it represents.
You are correct to point out that even with a resolution of the federal funding bill, Michigan has a long way to go to meet our transportation funding needs. We must also begin addressing this important economic and quality of life issue here in Michigan, instead of relying on Washington to completely solve the problem.
