Get more involved with MITA – Shape the future of “Innovative Contracting”
Thursday, February 25, 2010
As many of you are aware, MITA holds Quarterly meetings with MDOT to discuss and resolve an array of design and construction issues/problems.
As part of MDOTs commitment to address their recent push for various project delivery methods, MDOT has created an “Innovative Contracting” task force. The focus of this task force is to assemble and review past and current experiences with innovative contracting methods, develop a guidance document to assist MDOT in selecting innovative contracting methods and techniques, and recommend pilot programs for MDOT to explore innovative contracting methods.
Discussions with MDOT along with other industry associations, lead to the fact that the MITA/MDOT Quarterly meeting was the best venue for gathering Industry comments. So if you haven’t been involved in these meetings, now is the time. During our March 29, 2010 MITA/MDOT Quarterly meeting, we will focus the first half the meeting on “Innovative Contracting”. Items to be discussed are:
o Best Value
o Performance Based (Highways for LIFE)
o Project Specific Qualifications
o Lump Sum
• Delivery Methods
o Construction Manager at Risk
• Acceleration Techniques
o Accelerated Schedules
o Standard Incentive/Disincentives
o No Excuse Incentives
o Lane/Bridge/Ramp Rentals with Incentives
o Interim Completion Date Incentives
• Potential Innovative Contracting Techniques

The MITA/MDOT Quarterly meetings are an excellent opportunity for members to become more actively involved with MITA. At those meetings, MITA and MDOT come together in a cooperative way to discuss, and work towards the resolution of issues and concerns that have industry wide impacts. The MDOT participants in this meeting generally include: senior bureau level leadership, senior region leadership, division level leadership, and technical support staff.
