The U.S. House of Representative passed the federal stimulus package this week that would provide a $30 billion boost for roads and bridges across the nation and an added $8 billion in wastewater and drinking water projects.

In addition, the stimulus package would provide:

•    $1.5 billion for rural wastewater and water programs
•    $6 billion for broadband and wireless services to rural areas
•    $3 billion for airports
•    $20 billion for K-12 school construction

Calculations suggest that Michigan’s share of the road dollars will be about $900 million.  According to estimates, Michigan would see an increase of $240 in wastewater money and about $70 million for drinking water.  All of this money will likely be spread over a two-year period. MITA will continue to monitor these developments and keep you up to date as the U.S. Senate is expected to take action shortly.  Congress expects to send the bill to be signed by the president in mid-February.
