Lansing, MI – The broad based Michigan Transportation Team applauds Governor Snyder’s call for bold action now to just fix the roads, which rank among the worst in the nation. Fixing our roads will save drivers money by reducing the $357 cost the average Michigan motorist spends each year on unnecessary vehicle repairs.
Not fixing our roads now will cost us even more in the long term. Currently, 32 percent of Michigan roads are in poor condition. If we do nothing, by 2018 this number will jump to over 65 percent. Bringing a road from poor to good pavement condition costs 6 times more than it does to bring a road from fair to good condition. Fixing our roads now makes good fiscal sense.
Not only will fixing the roads improve Michigan’s economy, it will also save lives. One-third of all fatal and serious traffic crashes are due at least in part to poor road conditions.
The time is now to save money, save lives and just fix the roads. Our broad based coalition – at a time when Lansing is as divided as ever – is proof of the widespread grassroots support for fixing our roads now. We are ready to partner with the Governor and Legislature to support a comprehensive solution now that will fix our roads.
